Effects of dietary squid on lipids metabolism in mice

Abstract: In order to compare the effects of squid, pork and egg on lipids metabolism, 10% squid, pork or egg protein was added to normal and high-cholesterol diet to feed mice. The concentrations of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein and liver TC, TG, phospholipids contents of mice were measured. In order to observe the effects of dietary squid, pork and egg on the growth of mice, the body weight gain, liver and kidney weight, and testis adipose tissue weight were measured. As a result, squid as a high-quality protein decreased serum total lipid levels and atherosclerosis index(AI)in normal and hypercholesterolemia mice significantly (P < 0.05).Feeding squid increased hepatic lipid levels of normal mice but did not affect that of hypercholesterolemia mice. In conclusion, the squid as a kind of high-cholesterol food did not increase the risk of atherosclerosis induced by hypercholesterolemia.
